From the reviews
My two sons have been going here for about two months and they absolutely love it. There’s a great group of kids to practice with, and Sensei Patrick and the three other black belt instructors (Sempai Dan, Leah and Nick) are fantastic—supportive, skilled, and patient with all ages.
I trained at Atascadero Shotokan for about 6 months, until I had to stop due to a schedule conflict, and Sensei Curley is the best around. His teaching style follows closely to that of traditional Karate and his skill is truly remarkable.
Atascadero Shotokan Karate is a fantastic dojo. The instructors, Sensei Curley and Sempi Carpenter are top notch. As a teenager, I trained with a number of different instructors in Southern California, including some living legends. Atascadero Shotokan has provided the best karate instruction I have ever had.
Patrick Curley's Shotokan Karate school is very unique. First of all, the instructor is great with extensive knowledge. His teaching style is wonderful. He is always very focused, diligent and energetic. He is great with kids and anyone who gets a chance to know him.
Your first Karate class at Atascadero Shotokan Karate
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
