From the reviews

Training at Budo Traditional Karate for almost 5 years, has changed my life. I worked in a fast paced healthcare environment for 30 years. I helped to take care of a sister that battled breast cancer twice. I also had to help place my mom in a nursing home. I was mentally worn out and could not focus.

Budo Traditional Karate is the absolute best for learning true Shotokan karate. More than that, they are family. I’ve never been comfortable around others and I have many faults. I have never felt anything but love and team spirit from all those in the dojo. I am no karate master. I’m a yellow belt.

★★★★★ — Ben, May 2024

I’ve been training at Budo Trafitional Karate for almost 2 years. Sensei Renfrow has devoted his life to share his knowledge and life experience to make us all better people. I have learned so much about karate as well as myself in a short period of time.

★★★★★ — Rob, Jan 2025

I love that everyone who walks through the door is treated like family. Every class focuses on being in the right mindset, having control, and discipline to do better than the time before. It’s just as much about personal growth than skill. I’m so glad we are a part of the Budo Traditional Karate family.

Your first Karate class at Budo Traditional Karate

Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

Karate is a contact sport. Ease in, train within your limits, listen to your instructors, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
