From the reviews
We can’t say enough great things about Idaho Shorin-Ryu. Our son has grown tremendously—not just in his karate skills, but in confidence, strength, discipline, and leadership. Watching him develop into a strong, capable young man has been truly inspiring.
My experience with Sensei Ed has been nothing short of outstanding. As a parent, it's always a challenge to find an instructor who can engage young children while also teaching them discipline, respect, and self-confidence. Sensei Ed has mastered this balance.
Karate with Sensei Russell is one of the most rewarding activities you can do for your child! Sensei Russell is an incredible teacher. He is firm, fun, disciplined, and genuinely helps each kiddo become the best version of themselves because he deeply cares about every single one of his students.
Putting our kids in this class is one of the best decisions we could have made. It's so much more than learning self-defense. It's been so good for emotional, mental, and physical discipline. The skills our kids are learning will benefit them for a lifetime. Ed is very talented and works so well with kids of all ages.
Your first Karate class at Idaho Shorin Ryu Karate-Do
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
