From the reviews

My husband and I had been thinking about starting our 5 yr old in karate for awhile. We kickbox at the same facility where David teaches martial arts so it’s super convenient. But RJ LOVES Mr David’s class. Everyday when RJ gets out of school he’s asking if it’s time to go to karate!

We enrolled our son in David's Martial Arts Program after the first class (even though the first week is free) once we saw how great David is with the kids. David is just phenomenal with the children. David also instills great values while teaching like respect, and treating others how you want to be treated.

Mr. David is an awesome instructor, he is very good with the kids. I love the way he gets the parents involved in class and how he have Nerf Night on special occasions like end of school, beginning of school, etc. for the kids. And the whole time he's smiling...never seen him not smiling actually. Lol!

Great program for children! David Barnes is absolutely wonderful and AMAZING with children. My daughter gets so happy and her face lights up when she sees him. Just the mention of going to this gym, and she gets so excited! Her confidence has definitely skyrocketed, and she's come out of her shell a ton.

Your first Karate class at Kids Karate Memphis

Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

Karate is a contact sport. Ease in, train within your limits, listen to your instructors, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
