From the reviews
In my 8 years of practice, I believe that this dojo has been one of the greatest impacts on my life. I had an amazing experience being taught by Rastogi Sensei, the branchmaster there. He speaks fluent Japanese and is a high ranking martial artist - don't judge a book by its cover....
THE BEST Shorinji Kempo branch you will find in the USA. Not only are they the largest branch in the nation, I have quite literally never seen a large collection of dedicated and well disciplined individuals practicing week in and week out in a single organization.
As a shy, non-athletic 20-something, I started Shorinji Kempo over 10 years ago with the encouragement of my then black-belt boyfriend. And now, as a 30-something 2nd degree black belt and mom (yep, married the guy) I cannot not overstate the positive effect that Shorinji Kempo has had in my life.
Sensei Pankaj Rastogi and his wife Ukiko and many other senseis there have made such a difference in the lives of those who joined. They not only focus on the techniques of self defense but life lessons that will help us all become better people.
Your first Karate class at Orange County Shorinji Kempo Martial Arts
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
