Best Dojo in Alabama! Sensei Karl is an awesome teacher. Shihan Oyama is a legend in the martial arts community. If you want to learn Karate this is the place!
I trained in the dojo back in the 80's. I remember Shihan Miura, Saiko Shihan S. Oyama and my Shihan Y. Oyama now Saiko Shihan. I am almost 60 and continue to practice to this day. I remember Senpai Shoji. I loved training here.
My school used to fight full contact at major tournaments, often facing a few Oyama students in later rounds for first and second place in weight division. I live in Birmingham now, so I may have to stop by the dojo and see if any old guys recognize me, if they're still around.
I attended this school and I wish I could have stayed at it, but I had to move for work to Florida. If you want real authentic Karate, this is where you go. The training is excellent. Now I know what you are thinking, why should I trust this review?
Your first Karate class at Oyama Karate
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
