From the reviews

I was looking for some form of martial arts to begin implementing in my life when I found JR he is an incredible master and teacher, and through my journey with him I have not only developed incredible self disciplinary skills, but also management of my own mind in different life situations.

I have been a part of JR’s training for almost a year now (June 2024). His training has been invaluable and I love the style he teaches of Shobukan karate. Its traditional approach requires a mental toughness from oneself and I personally have become more disciplined in other areas of my life since doing this.

★★★★★ — Jachin, Mar 2025

I have been a fitness weight training junkie my whole life but had no idea how demanding and satisfying old school karate could be. It takes mental strength too. JR breaks it down and keeps it free from making a belt or achieving some certificate every month. This is about mastery of a discipline.

I had been looking for a way to compliment my current exercise regimen with something that would help my flexibility, balance and agility....I hit the jackpot with Ayers Academy. Not only have all three needs been met, but I'm learning martial arts which I never even entertained as an option for a 61 year old man!!

Your first Karate class at The Concrete Dojo

Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

Karate is a contact sport. Ease in, train within your limits, listen to your instructors, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
