From the reviews

I am 54 years old and I am a physician. I joined Yum's Karate two years ago as I was invited to practice with my sons for a short trial and I have stayed. I realized how beneficial it was for my general health and stress management. I feel much stronger and healthier since then.

Not your typical run of the mill karate place. It's a brilliant mixture of self defense, mind and body discipline, art and culture. My children have been going for years and I have nothing but the highest compliments for this institution.

I am so very fortunate to be a part of Yum's Hwa Rang Do. Perhaps the most important reason is related to my son Matthew. Since becoming a part of the program he has not only earned his black belt but in the process has become a very respectful and disciplined child.

★★★★★ — Joel, Sep 2013

Florida Hwa Rang Do is a great place to learn a traditional martial art. Grand Master Ki Tae Yum and the instructors do a fantastic job of teaching how to kick, punch, and defend yourself but they also stress the importance of having discipline, focus, and endurance as the students train so they can further improve…

Your first Karate class at Yum's Karate

Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

Karate is a contact sport. Ease in, train within your limits, listen to your instructors, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
