From the reviews
Shihan Walker is a fantastic martial arts instructor and renowned expert on the Shuri-Ryu (Okinawan) style of karate. The students are welcoming and the school offers a strong spirit of community with a desire for excellence and personal achievement.
I would highly recommend AOK, quite a confidence builder for children and young adults. Instructors are like no other far as a family friendly organization that teaches so much, manors, discipline and respect. Definitely a top investment for anyone. Hats off to Shihan Walker, top notch leadership in every way.
My daughter (8) and I (39) joined a couple months ago and have both become addicted to karate. We were looking for an activity/hobby for my youngest daughter and this has exceeded every expectation. Sensei Walker is great with kids, as well as us less coordinated adults (me).
As someone who has trained in martial arts in the past my experience here was quite different. Everything that is taught here is taught in both a technical and practical sense. The instructors here are very patient and down to earth making you feel as a student that you are important.
Your first Karate class at Academy of Okinawan Karate WAMA
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
