We have tried many different studios in the past but my daughter and I were instantly drawn in by Akka run by Mr. Burt. The location is nice because it's not in the middle of a busy shopping center (main perk) and my daughter has felt a level of inclusiveness she hadn't felt anywhere else.
AKKA Karate is amazing. 2 of my grandsons go and they love it... Mr Burt and Mr Harris are the best. They teach the kids skills in a kind and caring manner, but they also go beyond that. They want the best for them and keep them focused on the task at hand, in class and carry that over into everyday .
If you are looking for a great place for your child to learn karate this is the place! However it is so much more than just that! This gentleman will teach your child manners reverence respect created in an atmosphere of patience and encouragement! My grandsons confidence has improved greatly since coming to practice!
My son Cayden started here. He absolutely loves it!! He has mainly worked with Burt & Harris & they have been amazing with teaching him new skills. My son enjoys coming to class each week & loves learning new things. I can already see a confidence boost in him & his hard work that he has done.
Your first Karate class at AKKA Karate Independence
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
