From the reviews
I've studied here for 11 years, and have probably only just scratched the surface of what this school and its instructor, Sifu Jack Shamburger has to teach. This school offers a free women's self defense course twice a week. It covers reliable ways to stay safe out there.
Jack is the best teacher I’ve ever had and I’ve been practicing martial arts for the last 20+ years in the LES. Classes are skill and belt tailored as well as affordable. Personals for extra advancement inclusive in membership is simple the icing on the cake.
I visited this academy on a Tuesday evening for their free self defensive class and had an amazing experience. There were three instructors and the owner who taught the one and half hour class. Thank goodness we had a small enough group that we were able to each participate several times to learn the techniques.
Took the women’s self defense class tonight and still can’t believe it’s free. The class instructors were super friendly and patient. I learned a lot in just one class, but it is definitely the sort of class that you go to regularly to learn more.
Your first Karate class at Chinese Hawaiian Kenpo Academy
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
