From the reviews

We love Curtis Karate! My 4 & 5 year old kids love coming here twice a week. They have gained so much confidence. The staff is awesome and the instructors are so great with the kids! Feels like a little family!

★★★★★ — Samantha, Jan 2024

Curtis Karate is an amazing dojo. Both of my kids are on the autism spectrum, and they’ve been attending for about 2 1/2 years now. My older son, who is introverted and very shy, didn’t want to go at first, but by the end of his trial class, he surprised me by saying, “Sign me up!” I couldn’t believe it.

★★★★★ — Jenn, Oct 2024

I must say this place is amazing. My 9yr old son attends sessions every week here. Since enrolling him in these classes I have seen a wonderful change in him. The sensei's here are helping him to have more confidence in himself as well as defend himself.

★★★★★ — Xaviera, Feb 2024

"Even if we only contributed 5% to his growth, knowing we helped is huge." My son has been attending Curtis Karate for the past month, and within that time not only has he had an amazing time with each class, his behavior at home as markedly improved.

Your first Karate class at Curtis Karate

Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

Karate is a contact sport. Ease in, train within your limits, listen to your instructors, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
