From the reviews
No way to convey the tremendously positive impact this school had on my son's life. He trained under Master Ochiai (who still teaches most all classes) for 5 years, in the late 1990's.
I started training with Master Ochiai at the age of six and continued until I went to college. In that time, I learned the basic tenets of his philosophy: respect, self-discipline, and nonviolence. These principles have been invaluable both in my personal life and in my practice as an attorney!
Great with kids! Kids get taught by Master Ochiai himself. Atmosphere is very warm and welcoming for both participants and visitors. Highly recommend!
I was a student of Hidy Ochiai for fifteen years. He's one of the most inspiring and insightful teachers I've ever encountered. A master of his art and unstintingly generous in communicating it to us. I couldn't recommend him more highly.
Your first Karate class at Hidy Ochiai Karate
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
