Our family has been a member of the dojo for 10 years and it has been the best experience! Confidence, discipline, respect, coordination, are just a few of the benefits our boys have gained from being trained at the dojo. I can't thank Sensei and all the instructors enough for their hard work and example!
Friendly, wonderful people who really care about kids and their families. My son trained twice a week for 8 years from the age of 6. Sensei Speck and his team helped to make him into the strong, confident person he is today. I highly recommend the Genbu-Kai dojo.
Through Genbu-Kai I have improved my physical wellness, learned practical self-defense, and have become part of a wonderful group of individuals dedicated to bettering people through martial arts. I highly recommend Genbu-Kai MN for people of all ages.
This is the best place to practice Karate. It has an amazing community with excellent people and fantastic teachers. What makes it so truly special is that everyone I've met shows up because they're passionate people working every day to get a little bit better, a little bit stronger, and perhaps, if we're lucky, a…
Your first Karate class at Japan Karate-do Genbu-kai of Minnesota
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
