From the reviews

New England Shidokan Karate is the best! Classes are well disciplined and well scheduled. Nice and clean location. My son has been going here for four years and we so like this place!

Sensei Jay is excellent, my 3 year old daughter loves coming to class and has learned so much.... So now 6 years later my Daughter is now 9 years and will be going for her Jr. Black belt next year. I myself have also started classes 4 years ago and will be testing soon for my brown belt..

Sensei Jay is great and so patient with the kids! Even the ones you need extra patience with 😂 My child comes home with all these facts about Okinawan culture and counting in Japanese. Priced very reasonably (underpriced if you ask me) and won't try to sell you any unnecessary extras.

★★★★★ — Sarah, Apr 2023

Sensei Jay is fantastic with young kiddos and runs a fun and respectful program. Classes have helped our son with listening and discipline while keeping him engaged and active. It's also very cool to hear your 3 year old counting in Japanese at home!

Your first Karate class at New England Shidokan Karate

Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

Karate is a contact sport. Ease in, train within your limits, listen to your instructors, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
