From the reviews

Sensei Hioki is a great teacher with so much knowledge. I have spent over 30 years practicing martial arts and it is a great privilege to find an instructor that I can continue to learn karate from. He is patient with my son and his classes are always a great workout.

★★★★★ — Rhett, Jan 2017

Polio crippled my hips and legs, but Sensei Hioki took me seriously. Training under him was one of the best experiences of my life. He was trained by the best to be one of the best. He is extraordinarily skillful knowledgeable, experienced, sensitive and supportive.

★★★★★ — Patrick, Jun 2017

My name is Kenyan Moss i have been going to the Hioki Dojo since i was 10. I am now 14 and am hoping to stay for as long as i can. Being there for this long makes anyone and everyone who comes in family no matter what. We learn discipline and are always making improvements to anything we have already done.

★★★★★ — Kenyan, Aug 2016

I was just doing a delivery to this dojo. I engaged in a general conversation with Mr. Hioki. He struck me as a very considerate individual that I would never want to upset. He offered me an opportunity to try something outside my box. My daughter has been in karate for 8 years. She is amazing.

Your first Karate class at Phoenix Karate Hioki Dojo – Martial Arts Center Kyokushin and USA Oyama Karate

Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

Karate is a contact sport. Ease in, train within your limits, listen to your instructors, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
