From the reviews

I have been a student at TMI since 2015. I became interested in joining because my then teenage daughter was already a student and she was learning incredible martial arts skills and techniques. It looked like something I could benefit from and I was eager to learn.

I can personally attest to how well this self defense institution works. I signed my son up for this a couple years back, and now he consistently beats the hell out of me. It's ok though because I return the favor with a bottle of jack daniels and my belt LOL

★★★★★ — Johnathan, Dec 2023

Clean & Friendly. I have tried other martial arts studios for my kids and TMI is by far the best I've come across. The kids are not handed out new belts every other week to keep them happy, they actually have to earn them! Isn't that what it's suppose to be??

★★★★★ — Happy, Jul 2015

My son has attended the Tiny Tigers program at TMI for about a year, and its been a wonderful experience. The gym is clean with well kept equipment, and Ron's instruction is fantastic. He engages the children, and he has a great way of keeping them focused and disciplined.

Your first Karate class at The Martial Instinct Self Defense

Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

Karate is a contact sport. Ease in, train within your limits, listen to your instructors, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
