From the reviews
My kids have been training here for eleven years, and I couldn't imagine our family without this community. I even started my own journey to black belt when I was 39.
True North Martial Arts has been such a positive experience for our family. It’s more than just learning karate — it’s a place where kids are taught self-discipline, respect, and kindness in a supportive, family-friendly environment. The instructors truly care about each student’s growth, both on and off the mat.
I appreciate the level of structure and organization that’s provided. Time is managed well, it’s impressive how much it accomplished each session, and they still make time for fun during class. We enjoy the event that are held, they aide in establishing community outside of class.
It’s a truly special program! From its leader Mr. Hansen to the way the staff is trained to work with families, and how the teen instructors are taught to work with the younger kids and how younger kids are taught to be leaders (and possibly future instructors should they please) - it’s amazing to see these kids grow…
Your first Karate class at TrueNorth Martial Arts
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
