From the reviews
Sensei Arai has created a very secure, non-intimidating and comfortable environment for kids and adults of all ages to learn and practice Karate. I’ve seen 70+ year old women taking classes here lately during their afternoon class.
Sensei Arai is one of the kindest most caring people you will ever meet! Washington Karate association is highly disciplined but in an appropriate way that help people learn life skills. My son went there for years and although I never practiced I learned a lot listening.
I was in WKA from age 8 to 18 and it's the single best extracurricular activity my parents put me in. They do an excellent job building resilient, disciplined, athletic individuals. I felt like the WKA was a second family to me. Send your kid here if you live in the area and want to try Karate!
My daughters have been attending classes for three years and they love the class. They are fitter and it has made them more resilient and persistent. They have been doing well at school and are more focused. The facility is clean and spacious and the Sensei’s and Sempai’s are dedicated and very professional.
Your first Karate class at Washington Karate Association
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
