The classes they run
“Hanshi Jim and the other instructors treat my child like he is important and valued, and not just money walking through the door.”
“I can speak less of the adult classes, but if they are handled the way the kids classes are, they are probably the best.”
Other martial arts here
“The core curriculum is Isshin-ryu Karate, an old school Okinawan martial art, supplemented with jiujitsu (grappling and joint locks) and judo (throws and sweeps).”

What students say
“The sensei is extremely dedicated and kind, but also knows how to get tough when the kids need it.”
“This is a family oriented school, although kids and adults take different classes—leading toward a “junior black belt” for those under age 16.”

“The atmosphere is welcoming, a sign of which is the large number of female adult students and female black belts, but still very rigorous.”
From the reviews
As is the case with many of Jim’s adult students, I started taking karate here after my young son enrolled in the kids program. This is a family oriented school, although kids and adults take different classes—leading toward a “junior black belt” for those under age 16.
Hanshi Jim and the other instructors treat my child like he is important and valued, and not just money walking through the door. My son has been attending for 4 years now and I've finally decided to take classes myself. I feel like Hanshi truly cares about me and developing me as well.
The best karate dojo in the area. The sensei is extremely dedicated and kind, but also knows how to get tough when the kids need it. I have sent my daughter for over 6 years, more than half her life. I would send her no where else. They also are not a belt farm. They only raise the kids, when they are ready.
Excellent isshinru karate school. Perfect for families, with kid and adult classes. Our whole family have been students there for a few years now, and it's had such a positive impact in our lives. It's not just the workouts and technique, but the character development and friendships I value the most... 😁🥋
Your first Karate class at Western New York Karate Center
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
