From the reviews
I have been here for about five months. I have tried other styles and was not fulfilled. The Allen Academy is a breath of fresh air. They don't have your typical hide behind your belt instructors. They actually work out with the classes. This is a big deal to me, since all of them practice what they preach.
There aren't too many black belt instructors like the ones at the Allen Academy. I was very impressed at my information appointment. They were genuinely friendly and knew what they were talking about. I asked about the lineage of their system and unique style and they satisfied my questions.
I've been going to the Allen Academy since 2011 and did not know that when I joined the school that I would be joining a family. The instructors are great and they understand the different ways people learn which helps students understand the material.
I took a women's self defense class at Allen Academy and I thought the instructors did an excellent job of showing us techniques that I felt I could implement right away. It's one of those things you hope you never need those skills but should definitely prepare for.
Your first Karate class at Allen Academy
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
