From the reviews

Black Belt America has been a "lifesaver" for our family. Their aftercare program is not just well-run; it's exceptional. Their instructors genuinely care about the children. My son often receives handwritten notes with encouraging words or recognition of his accomplishments.

★★★★★ — Lydia, Jan 2024

Black Belt America cares about their students and building their confidence, their responsibility, and their focus. It is a great community of instructors and families both for their after school program and if in the 2 per week classes.

★★★★★ — Mary, Sep 2023

We had tried to get our youngest active with other sports and activities but he never quite got into them the way he has with karate. The team at Black Belt America is fun and professional, offering a clean and open space for instruction. They lead the students with the same respect that they expect in return.

★★★★★ — Daniel, Dec 2024

Really happy with our time at BBA thus far. The instructors are really engaging with the toddlers (and I assume that translates to the older groups). The facility is clean and neat. My toddler is learning confidence and the routine of going is helpful in building discipline and personal growth.

Your first Karate class at Black Belt America | Martial Arts School | Madison

Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

Karate is a contact sport. Ease in, train within your limits, listen to your instructors, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
