I have been with Coastal Shotokan Karate for 11 months. Sensei Tom and Senpai Roberto have a combined 70 years of experience in karate; their professionalism, dedication, and commitment to excellence is what has kept me at this location learning Shotokan Karate.
Coastal Shotokan and Sensei Tom Fruitticher are awesome. I have been practicing Shotokan Karate for about 2 decades and have had 5 other senseis. I cam to Costal Shotokan about a year ago, and it is clear that Sensei Fruitticher is a great teacher, he keeps the clases both fun, and disaplend.
I had previously taken JKA Shotokan classes in both Auburn and Mobile, many years ago. I was thrilled to find that I could begin practicing the same style nearby in Pensacola. Outside of belt tests/camps, Sensei Tom is the highest ranking JKA instructor that I have trained under.
We love Coastal Shotokan! Sensei Tom is the best teacher! He's so down to earth and makes sure you understand all his instructions. He does really well to incorporate all experience levels in one class. It's very well structured and organized. We've learned so much in 2 months.
Your first Karate class at Coastal Shotokan Karate
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
