From the reviews
My son was rejected at another dojo because he was too "young" to follow directions (he was 4 yo). Driving by we saw the Kaigan Karate Dojo and decided to stop by and give it a try. Almost 12 years and a black belt later the dojo has become my son's second house.
My son has been attending karate classes at Kaigan Karate-Do for two years now and really enjoys each class. The instructors (Sensei’s) are fantastic and really care about each child. They teach the children about respect and discipline all while giving the kids a good workout and having fun!
I’ve been training at Kaigan Karate-Do for the past year and a half alongside my son, and it’s been an incredible experience for both of us. We’re not just learning karate—we’re learning discipline, respect, and resilience together. I’ve seen my son’s confidence grow tenfold.
Best authentic karate school! Sensei Lopez and his team are extremely knowledgeable (in all aspects of martial arts from self defense to traditional kata "forms", to sparring and traditional weapons) and are excellent teachers for beginners of all ages as well as seasoned martial artists.
Your first Karate class at Kaigan Karate-Do
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
