My son has been a Kempo Student for more than 4 years. He always has a great time there. It’s not just about the techniques, it’s about discipline and meanings, and the instructors know how to get to the kids core! Sensei Pratt then, and Sensei Palardy now, both great human beings and role models.
Legacy Martial Arts of Westport answered the call when it came to making things right with my family! The interaction with the staff has been great. My kids loved their first consultation and look forward to learning in the Dojo.
My family has been part of the Legacy Martial Arts community for three years. I signed my son and daughter up for a trial class during a street fair, hoping to get them interested in something new. We had tried team sports and other activities but nothing held their interest.
LMA of Westport is terrific! We have two children, (6 & 4), enrolled in Kempo for about a year now and they have been responding amazingly well. Sensei Palardy met with my wife and I early on to explore what we would like our children to get out of martial arts.
Your first Karate class at Legacy Martial Arts of Westport
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
