My wife and I brought our son to Chico Seshindo to learn self-defense and confidence and we have certainly noticed the difference. Sensei Shane is patient and personable. During one of the tests (2 minute squat) we learned something about the level of determination that our son has.
My son started Seishindo Karate when he was 6 years old. My wife and I were a little nervous at first but after just one lesson we knew he was in good hands. The sensei (Shan) is unbelievable with kids and has a unique ability to read each kid and tailor his teaching style to meet each kid’s needs.
We feel so lucky to have found Seishindo. Shane is an incredible teacher. We so appreciate his patience, easy going style and the natural way he imparts wisdom. Over the last seven years we have watched our son learn karate but more importantly learn lessons of respect and kindness. I can't recommend Seishindo enough.
We love Seishindo! Shane connects with each child he teaches, knows their quirks and personalities, and quietly teaches them in a way that both makes them feel safe and able to make mistakes, while at the same time pushing and challenging them and building their confidence. He is amazing.
Your first Karate class at Seishindo Karate
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
