The classes they run
“Their children's classes are encouraging and effective.”
“Chintokan is THE place for traditional Japanese martial arts training in Karate-Do, Iai-Do, Jo-Do, Kobudo, or Aikido, for students of all ages and experience levels.”
What students say
“Generations of the Sakimukai family have devoted their lives to the practice and refinement of budo, and I am eternally grateful to have been their student for many decades.”
“The Sakimukai lineage has a very direct root to the founder of Shorin-ryu Karate-do and the results are in full displace from the time your entry the dojo door.”
“While it is not for everyone, the benefits for those who are willing to dedicate time and energy toward these disciplines are very real.”
From the reviews
The karate lineage is impressive. Soke Sakimukai was very knowledgable in karate. His son now runs the classes. I doubt there is a another school that instructs Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do in Jacksonville, let alone a different style that is as good.
I have been fortunate enough to train with the Sakimukai family for over 15 years and cannot recommend the Dojo highly enough. This place is a rare and special opportunity to learn traditional Japanese and Okinawan martial arts that have been kept relevant for the modern day that is tied to a very esteemed lineage.
I practiced Karate many years ago when I was younger. I was looking for a traditional Dojo where respect and the true love for Karate is still taught. Somewhere where I could relearn my love for the art and bring myself back into a world of tradition and respect, which is missing in many areas of the outside world at…
I first began practicing Iai-do at Chintokan in 1996, and have been a student of the dojo continuously ever since. Over that time, under the guidance of Soke, Dojocho, and SoShihan, and with the assistance of my fellow students, I have learned and grown more, both as a martial artist and (more importantly) as a…
Your first Karate class at Shorin Ryu Chintokan Karate
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
