From the reviews
My daughter has had a wonderful experience at West Haven Academy of Karate. Since joining, she has become more confident, focused, and disciplined. The instructors are patient and supportive, and they do a great job working with children of all ages. Mr.
I trained here as a child though my teens. I returned as an adult with a different perspective. West Haven Academy of Karate has helped me to improve my cardiac health, improve my fitness through strength training, improve my mental discipline, and provided this over-worked mom of 3 with much needed “me time”.
I have been a student here for over 7 years, along with my daughter. We are both Senior Dans. This studio has provided great training, support, encouragement, and solid leadership. I look up to KJN Ferraro as a leader for us, along with Master Savage. Outstanding and excellent team. Very impressed Great curriculum
We really love this dojo. My 5-year-old always looks forward to the lessons. Instructor Jim strikes the perfect balance between discipline and fun. The school has been around for decades, and it is inspiring to see adults (who trained there as children) still practicing the craft.
Your first Karate class at West Haven Academy of Karate
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
