From the reviews
I am both a senior instructor at the school and a parent of a student. I know first hand that the instructors are focused on the personal growth of every child and adult student that they work with.
I am a student here, and i would like to share my experience. I am a brown belt, a higher rank, but i still have a ways to go, for there are 10+ ranks. The instructors and assistants are nice, and hardworking. My fellow students are relatively nice, and it is a beautiful space.
Both my son and daughter have been part of the dojo for over 5 years, starting at ages 5 and 7, respectively. It has been a great experience for both of them, teaching them respect, discipline and fostering their will to strive for success and betterment.
I've been a student here for the last 5 years and I couldn't ask for a better experience. Between the instructors and the students, everyone is helpful and creates an enjoyable environment. I was so impressed with my experience that both my kids now join me, and they look forward to going to class.
Your first Karate class at Traditional Okinawan Karate of Pleasant Valley
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
