It is impossible to put into words how this studio has been life-changing for my family and I. While my son and I are the only ones who train but my entire family is seeing the benefits. I’ve wanted to learn karate for most of my life, but the time was right for me to start at 40.
Not sure about those negative reviews. Sounds more personal rather than professional. My girls started West Texas Karate (WTK) 4 years ago, at the ages of 3.5 and 5. My husband and I joined 2 years ago when they started up family classes, so we could train together as a family.
We have been with WTK for almost 4 years now, and couldn't be happier. My son started as a Little Dragon (age 4-6) and is now in the regular karate class. My husband and I are now both members, and our youngest is in Little Dragons.
West Texas Karate has been my home away from home for 5 years now, and I have loved every minute of it! The instructors are always encouraging and everyone there has become like family to me.
Your first Karate class at West Texas Karate
Nervous about walking into a Karate dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and a good sensei expects beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, then drilling basic stances, blocks, punches, and kicks — not hard sparring. Step to the side whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a gi if you have one); you'll train barefoot. What to bring: water, and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner gi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own gi and the belt your dojo awards you. Kumite (sparring) eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
